Generally speaking, the process of sizing a Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater involves the following steps:

1. Electrical Requirements Of Your Stiebel Eltron Tankless Water Heater:
Before even considering buying a Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater you need to verify that your house's electrical output and capacity is enough to support the Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater or (if it is not enough) to take note of the upgrades that you will need in your electrical system to accomodate the operation of the Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater. The following is a chart of the electrical requierements of all Tempra series tankless water heaters:

*Breaker size and wire gauge must meet all applicable local, state, provincial, and national electrical codes for your area.

IMPORTANT:If your home does not have the minimum household electrical service as specified for your desired model, you can still purchase a Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater, however, upgrades to your electrical service will likely be required. It is recommended that you consult your certified electrician for a quote, prior to purchasing.

2. Stiebel Eltron Tankless Water Heater Incoming Temperature
The following are our recommendations for Stiebel Eltron Tankless water heater models based on typical state or province incoming water temperatures. For the Tempra series tankless water heaters, we assumed 105 degrees F (hot enough for all domestic applications), and a water flow rate of at roughly 3 gallons per minute or more. If more than one tankless water heater model is listed for your climate zone, you can select  one of the larger tankless water heater models for more demanding applications with desired flow rates greater than 3 gallons per minute.

Note: This chart indicates all of the models that would be appropriate for each region based on the average expected incoming water temperature in the winter months and a desired flow rate of roughly 3 gallons per minute (GPM). Where multiple models are listed as appropriate, selecting a larger model will provided higher flow rates for more demanding applications. Your incoming water temperatures may differ from those assumed by this chart depending on your water source, location, season, and climate.

3. Water Demand - Maximum Flow Rate
It is also very important to know how much hot water would your Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater be required to provide. This, however, is a simple task. The Department of Energy (and various organizations) have compiled a table of average flow rates of standard home applications which is provided bellow for your convenience:

To determine your hot water demand , you simply add all the flow rates of the applications that you could be using simultaneously in your house. If you would like to be more accurate, you can measure exactly the flow rates of your outlets using a one-gallon bucket and a stop watch: Turn on the faucet, start the stopwatch and measure how much water flows through in a minute. Again, add up all the faucet outputs to see what your demand is.

The following chart is our recommendations based on a 105 oF final temperature (average household hot water temperature) and a 240V power input. If your Stiebel Eltron tankless water heater is of a lesser power input (say 208V), then the final temperature will be less than 105 oF.

Example: If your average incoming water temperature is 50 degrees and the maximum hot water flow that you may need at one time is 4 GPM, then the best Tempra model for you would be the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 tankless water heater.
